We’re going to try a game…..the game of minimisation

You know how we get to the end of a year and people do those “New Year, New Me” posts?
Not me, I’m getting ahead of the trend and starting in December.  It’s a bit like how most people start their diets on a Monday, (and finish them on Tuesday) I never do that either. I like to start things like that on a Wednesday.  Or a Sunday is quite good too.

Also I don’t plan on it being a new me, I plan to be the same irritating sarcastic bitch I’ve always been just with less clutter.

Along with some friends, I have decided to have a crack at the Minimalist Game.

The premise of this game is to rid your house of unnecessary crap, of which I have quite a bit.  My penchant for vintage or quirky pieces coupled with late night facebook auction pages has seen the bottom of my stairwell loaded up with some gorgeous finds and no home to put them in.  That an my inherent laziness for housework.  Honestly I must be such a disappointment to my mother who has the cleanest and tidiest house in all of Australia….but I digress.

The Minimalist Game is where you start at the beginning of the month – as you can see my rule-breaking inner rebel is already showing because it’s the 5th today – and on day one, you remove one item from your house.  Day two you toss two things and so on and so forth.  Even I can see day 27 is going to cause me some angst but I plan to blog each week about what I have discovered over the process and if I even manage to maintain it.   Anyone who knows me well in real life knows that THAT is one of my greatest challenges in anything.  Finishing things.

Part of the reason I have so much clutter is, without getting to psychological and in-depth on you all, is that I have these great project ideas and gather everything I need, make a start and then find some other shiny new exciting thing to do. Either that or there’s new Tom Hiddleston news and I fall down that glorious languid rabbit hole.

So it’s day one, but really day 5 so I have decided that I shall, in order to keep track of things, pick up where I am meant to be and toss 5 items from my various little piles around the house.  Yep, you’re even going to get pics of all my rubbish so we can farewell them in a lovely manner and celebrate their lives with me as they move on to their new home; either in the rubbish bin, the recycling bin or down the local charity shop.

So here is the catch up …

day1-5

  1. a diary from 2016 I never even opened.
  2. a nespresso coffee flyer and some info on my BFI membership.
  3. BFI June programme, a 2016 Stonehenge calender (again  never used it), a road assistance magazine and a gift bag.
  4. a singing birthday card, a single glove, a ruler and some papers that require shredding (ok that’s more than one item but they are all from the bank).
  5. a bag of bags, a sunhat I have worn once, a hair towel, and two dresses I have had in a bag and not worn.

Ok I did two lots of 4 if you were paying attention.  If you weren’t you just went back and read the list again didn’t you.

Join me next week and I will update you on challenge and we’ll have a look at how it’s all going.  I might even be able to talk a few of my friends in to contributing a paragraph about anything they have notice during this challenge. Yeah, you know who are!

In the meantime I shall sit here in my partially renovated office, which actually looks like something from a minimalist design catalogue.  It won’t be staying this way.  I am far to flamboyant to cope with a writing space like this for too long.

  1. Brilliant blog jacie. I am embracing the idea of minimalism too. Starting with a holiday for Xmas. Creating memories instead of buying stuff we do not need or want. Looking forward to seeing how you go with this xx
